Dunes into the sea, or salt pans at dawn?

★★★★★★★★★★4.8· 483 travellers on the most-booked coastal run

Namibia splits three ways and the split is geographic, not thematic. The coast gives you dune-and-ocean days you can book the night before. The southern desert wants two or three days minimum. The north is waterhole country. Pick the one your calendar can actually carry.

The coast day

Sandwich Harbour, tide permitting

5–7h· from $124· 4x4 only

South out of Walvis Bay along a beach corridor that only opens at low water, then up onto dunes that drop a hundred metres straight into the surf. Back for a late lunch.

The desert crossing

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, two days out

2–5 days· from $490· fixed departures

Nobody does Sossusvlei as a day trip from the coast and no honest operator pretends otherwise. Big Daddy at first light, the dead camelthorns on the white pan, a night under the desert sky.

The wildlife north

Etosha, where the animals come to you

1–9 days· from $123· park fees extra

You do not chase game in Etosha. You park at a waterhole on the rim of a salt pan the size of a small country and wait for elephant, oryx and rhino to walk in.

The days people fly in for

Six Namibian days worth building a trip around.

The 4x4 corridor to Sandwich Harbour, seals at Pelican Point, Deadvlei at sunrise, Etosha waterholes, the granite of Spitzkoppe, and the small living things in the dunes outside Swakopmund.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is where Namibia gets strange.

A lagoon full of flamingos, a working port, a sand peninsula loaded with Cape fur seals, and the only road in the country that runs between a dune field and an ocean. Almost everything here is a half day, which means you can fit two into one.

Swakopmund

Swakopmund: German bakeries, then the dune belt.

A seaside town of colonial gables and cold Atlantic fog that happens to sit against three hundred kilometres of sand. Quad bikes, fat bikes and sandboards leave from the edge of town, and the desert-ecology guides turn up live geckos and sidewinders inside the first hour.

Budget first

What a day in Namibia costs.

Every tour on the site sorted by price. The coast is cheap by the hour; the interior is bought in days rather than hours, and that is the whole budget story.

An hour on a quad bike, a fat-bike run over the dune belt, a city or community walk. Swakopmund and Windhoek fill this band on their own.

Where the country really lives — two to twelve days of desert and park with guide, vehicle, fuel and either a tent or a lodge bed included.

Windhoek

Windhoek is the day at each end of the trip.

The capital sits on the central plateau, two hours from nothing and four from everything, and almost every Namibian itinerary begins and ends with a night here. A half-day is enough to see the city properly, eat well, and collect the vehicle.

Katutura and Mondesa are residential districts of Windhoek and Swakopmund. Guided visits are led by residents and usually include a market and a family kitchen: community tours in Windhoek and Swakopmund.

Only here

Three things Namibia has that nowhere else does.

Deserts are common. A hundred-metre dune wall breaking into cold Atlantic surf, a peninsula holding fifty thousand seals, and a sand ecosystem you need a guide to even see are not.

A tide, not a road

The Dune Wall

Sandwich Harbour is a lagoon inside a World Heritage dune field, and the only way in is a beach the Atlantic takes back twice a day. Guides read the tide table before the booking sheet, which is why two operators running the same route can leave four hours apart. Deflated tyres, a long run south, then a climb onto a dune face that ends in surf.

Fifty thousand neighbours

The Seal Peninsula

Pelican Point is a hook of sand closing Walvis Bay lagoon, and a Cape fur seal colony has taken the whole of it. Paddle a kayak in and the young ones come out to inspect you, which is the entire point of the trip. Heaviside’s dolphins work the same water; the old lighthouse at the tip is a lodge now.

The Little Five

Life in the Sand

The dune belt north of Swakopmund looks empty and is not. A guide who reads the tracks will turn up a Palmato gecko, a sidewinder, a shovel-snouted lizard, a chameleon and a dancing white lady spider in a morning, all within sight of the road. Fog off the Benguela current is the only water any of them get.

Coastal weather

On the Namibian coast, the fog is the forecast.

The Benguela current pushes cold water up the coast and the desert air condenses over it, so Walvis Bay and Swakopmund wake up grey most mornings and burn clear by eleven. Nothing here is cancelled by it. The dunes look better in it, the seals do not care, and the inland tours drive out of it within twenty minutes.

Plan backwards

Book these before you fly into Windhoek.

Most of the coast can be arranged from your guesthouse the evening before. These cannot. They run on tide tables, fixed weekly departures and vehicles that seat six, and none of them care what day your flight lands.

  1. 01Sandwich Harbour Half-Day 4×4 Scenic ExcursionThe beach corridor south of Walvis Bay is only passable around low water, so departure times move with the tide and most operators run one or two vehicles.
  2. 023 Day Sossusvlei Budget Camping SafariSossusvlei is five hours from the nearest coastal town. These are two to five-day trips on fixed departure dates, not a spare afternoon.
  3. 03Pelican Point Kayaking Half-Day TourKayak groups are capped at a handful of paddlers and the launch depends on wind, so the settled mornings go first.
  4. 04Etosha National Park: Full or Half-Day Game DriveEtosha is a full day north of Windhoek and the vehicles are small. Park entry is bought per person per day on top of the tour price.
The north

In Etosha you stop the car and let the pan come to you.
